Humanity
I feel like a majority of people at one point lose almost all faith in humanity after witnessing something just awful that humans are capable of doing and I am sad to admit that that happened to me the other day. I was walking through a parking lot when I noticed that there was a running car in front of me in one of the parking spaces. Naturally, I didn't want to get hit, so I walked to the opposite side of the lane, keeping loose tabs on the car. Now, it's not really all that strange to have cars running in their parking spaces for a minute or two because of a variety of reasons: talking on a phone, making sure a wallet is in the car, changing the radio station, etc... Since this is the case, I wasn't really surprised when the girl opened her car door-I just assumed she had forgotten something in the trunk (or another scenario along those lines). However, she hadn't forgotten anything at all. After the car door was opened, a puff of smoke floated into the air, making it evidently clear that she was smoking. She leaned out the open door and at first I thought she was going to throw out her cigarette, but I was wrong. Instead, the cigarette remained firmly clamped between her lips, and her hand emerged instead...clutching a medium drink from one fast food restaurant or another. As I watched in growing dismay, she placed the cup on the ground between her car and the neighboring one, shut the door, backed out, and drove away. I was speechless and am still in slight shock just writing about it. I mean, I know not everyone in the world is good and things like this happen, but it's always so different just seeing it happen right in front of you. After all the good some people do to try and prevent littering and wasting water/energy (among other causes), it's just like a slap in the face to see someone so blatantly not caring. So I'm not going to lie, for a millisecond there, I did lose some faith in humanity, but it was soon restored when I saw a couple pushing their baby in a shopping cart with contented smiles on their faces.
